Ponga Gifts New Zealand

This range of Ponga Gifts is handmade in Cambridge, New Zealand. Cambridge is a small town in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand. The national symbol of NZ is the Silver Fern, it comes from the NZ Tree Fern, there are eight species specific to this country, the largest being the Mamaku Ponga which can grow to 20 metres in height. The Maori name for NZ's native tree fern is 'Ponga'. These products are made by removing the fiberous outer bark and are then shaped and cure dried using a kiln drying process which heat treats them customs friendly and no problem to export overseas. This curing process enhances the texture and also intensifies the fernwoods natural colouring.

Facts about Ponga

Ponga or as it is known silver fern, is predomininly found in the North Island. Its underside is distinctively silver and many generations ago Maori would leave these Ponga tree leaves with the underside facing up so that when passing by with burning torches they would dtrongly reflect the light, showing a pathway to follow. The Ponga tree fronds themselves can reach up to 4 metres in length and the trees can grow up to 10 metres high. Ponga tree fronds were also used as a floor, silver side down to prevent the spores from billowing around after the seeds had dried.
